Dear Holy Family Classical School Community,
It is my great joy to introduce Dr. Alexander Skufca as the new Headmaster of Holy Family Classical School. Dr. Skufca is a passionate Catholic educator, a seasoned administrator, and a joyful teacher whose life’s work has been devoted to the renewal of classical education in the service of the Church.
Dr. Skufca brings more than a decade of experience in classical schools and Christian academic settings, where he has distinguished himself as both a thoughtful leader and an inspiring teacher. Most recently, he has served as Head of Upper School at Holy Family Academy in Covington, Louisiana, where he oversaw the academic and cultural life of students in grades 7–12. In that role he mentored faculty, strengthened the school’s classical identity, expanded the upper school program, and fostered a vibrant student life rooted in the intellectual, athletic, and spiritual traditions of classical education.
Previously, he served as the founding Headmaster of Chesterton Academy of Divine Mercy, where he helped build the school from the ground up, developing its curriculum, forming faculty, and guiding the school through its approval by the Louisiana State Board of Elementary and Secondary Education.
Dr. Skufca is also a gifted classroom teacher. Throughout his career he has taught Latin, Ancient Greek and Roman history, philosophy, logic and rhetoric, and civics. His teaching is marked by lively Socratic dialogue, deep engagement with the great texts of Western civilization, and a clear commitment to forming students in wisdom and virtue. Earlier in his career he taught at The Dunham School in Baton Rouge, where he also served as Chair of the Department of World Languages, mentoring fellow teachers and advancing an integrated approach to the liberal arts across the curriculum.
A scholar of the ancient world, Dr. Skufca earned his Ph.D. in Classics from Florida State University, where he wrote his dissertation on ancient historian Diodorus Siculus and late Hellenistic politics. He previously graduated summa cum laude from Gettysburg College, earning honors in Classics and election to Phi Beta Kappa. During his academic formation he also studied in Rome and participated in international seminars exploring the enduring significance of the classical tradition.
More important than his impressive credentials, Dr. Skufca is a faithful Catholic, a man of deep intellectual curiosity, and a leader who loves students, teachers, and families. He believes deeply that classical education, rooted in the Catholic intellectual tradition, forms young people not only for college and career, but for lives of virtue, wonder, and service to God. His desire to be in a parish classical school is particularly exciting.
Please join me in warmly welcoming Dr. Skufca, his wife Elizabeth and their 11 month old son Charles to the Holy Family community. We look forward to the leadership he will bring to our school and to the continued flourishing of our mission to form joyful disciples through the beauty and wisdom of the classical tradition.
We hope to get Dr. Skufca here in the weeks ahead to meet the community before he and his family move here in June.
In Christ,
Very Rev. Brian O’Brien
Rector, Holy Family Cathedral
